Reiki Session FAQ

What to expect during your Bodhi Shade Reiki session...

The information below is intended to help prepare you for your session:

-- What do I have to do during the Reiki session?

  • Sessions require nothing more of you than to lie on the massage table (or sit in a chair), and relax. You may close your eyes or leave them open. Full table sessions include front and back body treatments. I will sometimes ask you to breathe to help clear blocks, ground, etc. I may occasionally move your head, arms, and legs gently during the session.
  • Please remember to turn off your cell phone before your session.

--How long do the sessions last?
  • This depends on the treatment session you opt for. Full sessions are normally an hour, occasionally a bit longer. Chair sessions are normally around 20 minutes.

--Do I have to fill out any forms?
  • You will be asked to sign a release form before your first Reiki session (a copy can be provided before you schedule a session upon request). You will also be asked to fill out a client intake form, which is optional.

--What should I wear for my Reiki session?
  • Wear comfortable clothing for your session. Tight clothing, suits, skirts, etc. are usually less comfortable than sweat pants and sweat shirts. Other than the removal of some jewelry, eye glasses or contacts, and shoes, no other disrobing of any kind is required.

--How do you do the hand positions?
  • Hand positions are sometimes done with direct contact, sometimes “beamed” or “swept.” Private body areas are never treated with direct hand contact. Hand positions are held anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes at a time. I may move around the table several times during the session and address the same areas more than once. Some sessions require me to make many "passes" over an area, while others require me to "stay put" on one area for longer periods.

--What will I feel during the session?
  • Clients find Reiki sessions very pleasant and relaxing. Sometimes clients experience sensations related to catharsis. Other times clients may fall asleep. Sometimes feelings described as "tingly," "electrical," or "magnetic" are reported in various parts of the body. Clients occasionally feel hot or cold during a session. Let me know if this happens and I can provide a blanket, drink of water, etc.

--Can I have music played during my session?
  • Soft music is usually played during a session. If you dislike the music chosen for your session, let me know and I can select different music to suit your preference (or no music at all).

--What else is provided during my session?
  • Water and tissues are on hand at all times. You will have access to a restroom at all times. Soft light or candles are usually used during a session. Incense is sometimes used during sessions, though you’re welcome to ask me to remove the incense if it bothers you.

--Can I talk during the session?
  • Most clients prefer to avoid talking during the session. But you are free to ask questions or speak to me during the session if you wish. I may occasionally provide or ask for verbal feedback from you during the session.

--Does Reiki ever involve sexual contact?
  • Reiki sessions constitute a "non-erotic" therapeutic service. No sexual contact is ever involved and no treatment of sexual areas is provided.

--Can I decide to stop the session in the middle?
  • Should you feel the need to end your session early, for any reason, feel free to do so.

I attempt to make each session as relaxing and enjoyable as possible for my clients. I am always open to accommodating special needs or requests on behalf of my clients. Please let me know at the time of scheduling of any special needs or requests you may have.

If you have any questions, as always, feel free to write: crow26354@gmail.com

A Brief History of Usui Reiki

(Note: There has been considerable debate in the Reiki community for many years regarding the factual history of Reiki and it’s founder, Mikao Usui. While a teaching of the history of Reiki is considered a critical part of traditional Reiki instruction, I personally prefer to emphasize the proper practice and exploration of Usui’s method rather than getting preoccupied with the precise dates and locales associated with Reiki’s past. What follows is, according to the most up-to-date information available, the Reiki story as accepted by most Reiki practitioners. This is not to say that there aren’t other versions of the story, or that there isn't the possibility of this account being in error in some way. But it reflects, I think, the important events leading up to our use and understanding of Reiki today.)

(Portions of the material in this chapter are used courtesy of The International Center for Reiki Training, William Lee Rand, and Essential Reiki, by Diane Stein – Crossing Press, 1995)

Reiki originated in Japan, although there are many theories as to precisely when, where, and who started it. Generally, it is believed to have come from a form of Tantric Buddhism originally practiced in Japan in the 9th century. Some scholars believe that Reiki’s real roots reach back further, to very ancient Tibetan, Auyervedic or Chinese techniques, possibly preceding even the common use of herbs and medicinals in healing.

Reiki’s modern history begins with a Japanese Buddhist scholar named Mikao Usui.

Dr. Mikao Usui, or Usui Sensei as he is called by his students in Japan, is the founder of the Usui System of Reiki. He was born August 15th, 1865 in the village of Yago in the Yamagata district of Gifu prefecture, Japan. It is thought that he entered a Tendai Buddhist school near Mt. Kurama ("horse saddle mountain") at age four. He also studied kiko, the Japanese version of qigong, which is a health and healing discipline based on the development and use of life energy. The young Usui found that these healing methods required the practitioner to build up and then deplete his own life energy when giving treatments. He wondered if it were possible to do healing work without depleting one’s own energy. He went on to study in Japan, China and Europe and ended up spontaneously receiving Reiki during a meditation practice on Mt. Kurama.

Usui Sensei had an avid interest in learning and worked hard at his studies. He traveled to Europe and China to further his education. His curriculum included medicine, psychology, and religion as well as fortune telling, which Asians have long considered to be a worthy skill. It is thought that he was from a wealthy family, as in Japan only the wealthy could afford to send their children to school. Eventually he became the secretary to Pei Gotoushin, head of the department of health and welfare who later became the Mayor of Tokyo. The connections Usui Sensei made at this job helped him to become a successful businessman. Usui Sensei was also a member of the Rei Jyutu Ka, a metaphysical group dedicated to developing psychic abilities.

In 1914 Usui’s personal and business life was failing. As a sensitive spiritualist, Usui Sensei had spent much time meditating at power spots on Mt. Kurama where he had received his early Buddhist training. So he decided to travel to this holy mountain, where he enrolled in Isyu Guo, a twenty-one-day training course sponsored by the Tendai Buddhist Temple located there. We do not know for certain what he was required to do during this training, but it is likely that fasting, meditation, chanting and prayers were part of the practice. In addition, we know there is a small waterfall on Mt. Kurama where even today people go to meditate. This meditation involves standing under the waterfall and allowing the waters to strike and flow over the top of the head, a practice which is said to activate the crown chakra. Japanese Reiki Masters think that Usui Sensei may have used this meditation as part of his practice. In any case, it was during the Isyu Guo training that the great Reiki energy entered his crown chakra. This greatly enhanced his healing abilities and he realized he had received a wonderful new gift - the ability to give healing to others without depleting his own energy.

Through this miraculous rediscovery of an ancient healing practice, Usui had the foundations for what we know today as Reiki. Usui named the practice 'Reiki' meaning 'universal life energy'.

Usui began using Reiki any time he could. He began by healing monks at his monastery, and eventually went on foot, through Japan, teaching and healing as he went. Through continued practice and exploration, Usui gradually refined his methods and became well-known as a healer.

During his mission, he met a retired Japanese naval officer, Chujiro Hayashi. Hayashi was impressed with the power of Reiki and eventually received his master's training from Usui in 1925.

Mikao Usui died in 1930.

Hayashi acted as Usui's successor and trained teams of Reiki healers. Soon thereafter, Hayashi opened a Reiki clinic in Tokyo.

It was to Hayashi's clinic that a woman named Hawayo Takata, the widow of a sugarcane farmer from Hawaii, went for healing in 1935.

Takata had been in bad health for years; respiratory problems, gall bladder disease, etc. She was told by doctors that she desperately needed surgery but that she might not survive it. The night before the operation, she heard a voice telling her, "The operation is not necessary." She heard the same voice with the same message again the next morning, just before the anesthetic was administered. At this point, she literally got off the table and asked the doctor if there was any other way she might receive treatment. The doctor suggested Hayashi's Tokyo Reiki clinic.

Takata stayed at the clinic for 4 months and was completely healed. In 1936 Takata received her Reiki I training from Hayashi and worked with the teams of healers at the clinic. In 1937 she received Reiki II.

After two years, Takata returned to her native Hawaii where she continued to use and teach Reiki.

In 1938, Hayashi and Takata did a Reiki lecture tour together. During this time, Hayashi attuned her as a master and announced her as his successor as Reiki Grand Master. Hayashi gave her specific instructions that when he summoned her back to Japan she was to go immediately.

In 1941, according to Takata, she awoke to see a vision of Hayashi standing at the end of her bed. She knew this was the summons, and left for Japan right away. When she arrived she found Hayashi and all the Japanese Reiki Masters present. Hayashi announced that a great war was to be fought and that Reiki and all who practiced it were in danger. Furthermore, Hayashi revealed that he had been called back to active duty. Rather than take part in the killing of others Hayashi chose death. It is reported that on May 10th, 1941, in the presence of his students, he psychically stopped the beating of his own heart and died. Other reports maintain that Hayashi bid farewell to his students and family and lived the rest of his life in hiding.

As World War II began, the Reiki clinic could no longer remain in operation. Hayashi's widow was forced to close it.

Takata kept Reiki alive in Hawaii. Eventually, she went to the U.S. mainland, Canada, and Europe, spending the rest of her life training hundreds of people in the Usui Reiki system. Takata died December 11th, 1980. But she had spread Reiki through enough of the world to keep it alive after her death.

Since Takata's death, Reiki has undergone many changes and has seen several off-shoots develop. These include Seisheim, Radiance, and Reiki Plus systems. But the Usui system remains the most traditional and pure in terms of holding to the original teachings of Usui, Hayashi, and Takata.

Reiki Ethics & Session Guidlines (For Practitioners)

Bodhi Shade Reiki Ethics & Guidelines

Much has been written and debated about various ethical issues regarding Reiki over the past few years. While I do believe some guidelines and boundaries ought to be clearly defined, I also sometimes feel that this endeavor of debating the minutia of professional conduct is really more of an intellectual hobby for those interested in creating some sort of “do/don’t” list for Reiki practitioners. Frankly, if someone is in need of such a list, or confused about how to properly and professionally conduct themselves in the context of a healing session, practicing any sort of healing art is probably not wise for them to do. I do not offer Reiki certification to anyone who I feel does not have a clear appreciation and respect for the importance of integrity and honesty in Reiki. Still, with more and more people offering Reiki services and building businesses around their practice, it's a good idea to consider some guidelines. So I've listed a few of the ethical considerations regarding the practice of Reiki along with my own comments derived from my experience and personal views. You're welcome to your own views, of course. But I do ask my Reiki students (those who are certified to practice via my classes) to practice with honesty, integrity, and simple common sense. (The information presented below comes from the Reiki Level I training manual I created for my classes.)

1) Asking permission

It is generally considered appropriate to ask a person’s permission before beginning to use Reiki on them. It's simply common courtesy, and since Reiki does often involve direct physical contact, it can easily be perceived as impolite (and potentially risky) to begin to do Reiki on someone who hasn't agreed to it. Since most of us like to maintain some degree of personal space, it's particularly important for a Reiki practitioner to demonstrate an awareness and respect for this space. There may be an occasion when you wish to offer Reiki to someone who is unconscious and therefore cannot be asked permission directly. Normally, it’s considered appropriate in that situation to ask an attending family member or friend before doing Reiki. Some Reiki healers also believe it to be possible to “test” for permission before doing Reiki by beginning the opening “connective” position and sensing for what can only be described as an “energetic refusal.” This can feel as though a pair of invisible hands is pushing your hands away. This is taken as a sign to stop the Reiki healing.

2) Applying hands-on positions to sexual areas/disrobing

Never apply hands-on Reiki positions to sexual areas of the receiver without specific permission. Doing so can obviously create discomfort for the receiver. For people involved in a professional Reiki practice it is particularly important to use caution with sexual areas as there could be legal ramifications to ignoring the privacy of the receiver. Although it’s usually not necessary to treat sexual areas during a session, there may be times when the treatment of these areas is requested (problems with breast health, or reproductive issues, for example). Always explain where you would put your hands, and tell the receiver that they can elect to have the area treated through beaming, or not at all. Another technique that can be used is to have the receiver apply their own hands to the area, and then place your hands over theirs, rather than making direct contact. Since our culture is particularly sensitive to issues around sexuality, it's important to protect both yourself and your client by being clear where issues of sexual contact is concerned. Honor their request. If in doubt, always opt for a beaming technique over private areas. If treatment of these areas is needed for a particular receiver, be sure to agree on your procedure before beginning the session.

I've personally never found it necessary to use direct contact positions on private body areas during any Reiki session. When doing hand positions close the chest or lower abdomen, for example, I sometimes hold my hand over the area, and ask the client, "may I position my hand here?" before doing so.

It is never necessary to disrobe for a Reiki session. Remember that some clients may feel uncertain or vulnerable during a Reiki session. Trust is absolutely critical for a Reiki session to be successful. As a practitioner, you have an obligation to do what you can to make your client feel comfortable and safe during the session. I ask my clients to remove some jewelry (usually watches, earrings, and necklaces), eye glasses or contacts, and shoes. Beyond that, they're welcome to wear whatever they're comfortable wearing.

Be sure to provide your client with a clean, private area for changing before and after the session.

3) Discussing disclaimers

When doing a Reiki treatment for a specific medical problem, it’s a good idea to inform the receiver in writing that Reiki is not to be confused with a medical treatment or cure. It’s risky, unethical, and simply unkind to lead a receiver to believe that their medical condition will be completely eliminated during a Reiki session. Never make suggestions to your client about the use of prescription medication or any other treatment issues that would normally be determined by a doctor. If you are doing Reiki on someone with a serious condition, you should inform them clearly that Reiki is not intended to cure or diagnose a medical condition. This is not meant to limit the possibilities of Reiki. But as discussed in the section on healing, healing can take many forms and can happen over a period of time, not just during the session itself. Or, in the conventional sense of physical healing, it may simply not happen. There are no limits to what is possible with Reiki. But also bear in mind that people with serious medical conditions can occasionally assume that Reiki automatically equals a total cure of their condition.

Having your client sign a waiver is a way of protecting yourself and your client, and clearing up any misconceptions your client might have regarding the purpose of a Reiki session. Unfortunately, our culture tends to rely more on litigation than common sense sometimes. So it's simply become a matter of necessity to include a signed waiver and/or release form for each Reiki client. (I can provide you with a copy of the one I use if you wish).

4) Confidentiality

What happens during a Reiki session should be honored as a private experience for the client. Your client may share their inner feeling, fears, or express aspects of their personal lives that they prefer to keep private. Do not discuss specific experiences related to your client's Reiki session with other people. Assure your receiver that you will maintain total confidentiality regarding your Reiki work. You can include a statement about this privacy policy in your waiver, release, or terms & conditions.

If you find yourself faced with issues from your client you feel are of a more urgent medical or mental health need, refer them to a doctor or mental health professional.

5) Sharing Impressions

Some Reiki healers will receive “impressions” or what some might call “psychic information” about the client during the session. There has been some debate about whether to share these impressions with the client. I don’t believe there’s a definitive answer here, although I generally believe that there is probably a reason for such information to arise in the mind of a Reiki healer during a session, and it’s most likely that it’s there for the purpose of the client, not the healer. My method is to say, “I’m getting a sense about your emotional (or mental, physical, spiritual) situation. Would you like me to share it with you now?” The client may not feel “ready” to hear certain impressions. So honor their request to not hear about any impressions if they so choose. If asked to share impressions, use care to offer only the information you are receiving without added commentary or guesses as to what it means. My own experience is that such information comes in a rather generic manner. Rarely do I sense information with a specific "here's exactly what's going on" feel. Allow the client to take in the information and compile their own conclusions. Always make it clear that what you are providing is simply an "impression," which must be assessed by the client. Some clients will press you for more information. Offer only the impression you have. Don't embellish, speculate, or try to interpret beyond the raw information.

Note that having such impressions is not necessary at all to do Reiki effectively. Traditionally, no real attention or guidelines have been given to this kind of experience, and I tend to see it arising in the Reiki community only because the practice of energy work tends to attract people already relatively sensitive to the subtleties of the human energy field. Reiki people are usually very intuitive souls, so it's not unusual that they would sometimes "pick up" on some subtle impressions about their clients on occasion. But in short, if you don't get impressions, don't worry about it in the least.

6) Hygiene/Smells

Unfortunately, this is an issue some Reiki practitioners overlook. A Reiki session involves direct hands-on contact with your client. Your hands will be around their face and neck, and therefore should be freshly washed and free of strong scents, including lotions or essential oils (it's no fun having a Reiki treatment from someone whose hands smell like the turkey sandwich they had for lunch!). As you're spending a lot of time in your client's "personal space," be sure you haven't just finished a workout at the gym.

Oils, perfumes, lotions, hair products, can all produce smells your client can find troublesome even though you may not notice them or be bothered by them at all. Room smells can also be an issue. I once did a session for a client while letting some Nag Champa incense burn nearby. My client's eyes welled up with tears, which I assumed meant she was having a cathartic release. Only later did she confide that the incense was the cause! If you use candles, essential oils, or incense during your session, always check with your client and give them the option of having you extinguish the scents.

When using a Reiki or massage table, always be sure your table has clean linens for each session. Plan on having several clean sheets, a hypoallergenic pillow, and a couple of blankets on hand.

7) Respect other's Reiki views

One of the uglier aspects of the Reiki community arises when Reiki practitioners and masters proselytize or argue about Reiki ideologies, practices, and techniques. I encourage my students to avoid, at all costs, engaging in ego battles over who is using the most effective symbols, whether certain hand positions are better than others, or how an attunement has to be done. While it's true that Reiki is sometimes so loosely taught that it can lose some of it's value and potency (which is true of just about any discipline), dragging a healthy debate into the realm of personal attacks or ideological warfare doesn't do justice to the practice and spirit of Reiki, and is a real disservice to Reiki clients. While some will insist that their's is the "right and only way" to do Reiki, know that Reiki has - for better or for worse - become far too disseminated worldwide for any one individual or group to oversee, regulate or control. For Reiki to thrive, we must begin from a place of tolerance and an understanding that not everyone will use or view Reiki in the same way. If you feel the need to express a disagreement with another in the Reiki community, always do so with love and respect.

Chakra Affirmations

These simple affirmations are sometimes used in my meditation and Reiki work as a means of focusing on specific energy centers. Using the power of verbiage to focus on these areas often results in some significant improvements in functioning and healing.

  • 1) Muladhara - Root: I am connected to all living things and am releasing my power into the universe

  • 2) Svadisthana - Sacral: I am part of a flowing, creative process and take pleasure in my participation in it.

  • 3) Manipura - Solar Plexus: My will is focused, my power balanced, my intent pure.

  • 4) Anahata - Heart: I give freely, and receive deeply, boundless love and compassion.

  • 5) Vishuddi - Throat: I communicate with honesty and integrity, firmly and gently speaking my truths.

  • 6) Anja - Brow: I am perceptive, insightful, and connected to the knowledge of the entire universe, past, present, and future.

  • 7) Sahasrara - Crown: I am completely liberated, totally free.

A Guide to the Human Energy Field (HEF)

Energy work assumes that a human being is more than the visible body and internal organs. Besides the bones, blood and tissue, the human body is composed of several layers or "bodies" of energy, most of which are not visible under normal conditions. These invisible bodies are sometimes called “auras.” Together, they make up what is today commonly called the “Human Energy Field” or “HEF."

While there continues to be debate about the existence of bioenergy in some scientific circles, there is also growing interest and acknowledgment among some scientists who see the HEF as a viable - and measurable - phenomenon. For more on this, be sure to read the articles via the links below.

Various energy systems and schools divide these energetic bodies in different ways. Some systems hold that there are seven bodies corresponding to the seven major chakras, others claim there are ten, twelve, twenty-one, etc. What is presented here is simply one model I happen to find useful. It describes three planes, each of which holds one or more of the eight energetic bodies. The brief outline below will take each body, beginning with the physical, and moving outward one layer at a time. The information presented here about each body is comprised of both classic and contemporary literature on the subject, as well as the cumulative anecdotal reports from energy workers over many decades. Some of it is derived from the work of Barbara Ann Brennan and her “Hands of Light” work.

PHYSICAL PLANE:

Physical Body – The physical body needs little description. It’s the body you see and use to interact with the physical world. The various internal organs, skin, limbs, sensory apparatus are all part of the physical body. It's important to remember, of course, that the physical body is where we often detect problems or imbalances that may originate from one or more of the other energetic bodies.

Etheric Body – (Sometimes called the “Etheric Double”) Extends about ¼ to 2 inches out from the surface of the physical body. It is an energetic twin to the physical body. When visualized it can appear as a fine bluish mist or gray smoky layer surrounding the physical body (some say "peach colored"). Reiki is often considered to have great impact on the etheric body. There are corresponding etheric doubles not only for the body as a whole, but for each organ and major system in the body. The etheric body is considered the "animating force" of a living body, which is to say that other living things, such as plants and trees, also have etheric bodies. When Reiki clients report feeling "tingly" or "electrical" sensations during their session, it is believed that this is mainly due to the changes in the etheric bioelectrical field surrounding the physical body.

Emotional Body – This layer is considered to be the energetic storehouse of our emotions. It transfers the effect of emotional states through the etheric to the physical (i.e. a bad day at work turns into a headache). The Emotional Body extends from about 1 to 4 inches outward from the physical body. Skilled energy healers often focus their efforts on locating and releasing blocks on this level to prevent physical illness from manifesting. Sensitive healers will sometimes report being able to contact the Emotional Body by asking the receiver of the Reiki treatment to describe his or her emotional feelings in the moment. Visually, this body contains all the colors of the rainbow, although muddied colors suggest emotional blockages.

Mental Body – Our thoughts create our reality by influencing our emotions. The Mental Body is the field in which thoughts are generated. Because most of our modern lives demand a great degree of mental activity, the Mental Body is often seen by the energy worker as being “overstressed” or burdened. Most cathartic releases begin – not at the emotional level – but on the mental level. Visually, the mental body is usually yellowish or beige but can become quite bright, like golden sunlight. People with strong intellects or a high degree of mental curiosity will often show bright Mental Bodies. Extends about 4 to 10 inches out from physical body.

ASTRAL PLANE:

Astral Body – There is one body on the astral level. The Astral Body is considered to be the source of “higher expression” of the physical, mental, and emotional levels. Some believe it is a kind of “shell” dividing our functioning within what we would think of as the natural world and the spiritual world. Gurdjieff called it the "vessel of the soul." It is often described in terms of a vehicle by which consciousness moves and travels, sometimes to or through the other planes. It also seems to serve as a kind of bridge over which information travels between material and spiritual levels. The astral level is considered the level of “universal love” or “unified connection.” The Astral is not bound by space or time. It is associated with psychic communication, and so is of particular interest to healers working over distances. Many Reiki healers believe that it is from their Astral Body that Reiki itself is channeled. It extends about 10 to 15 inches out from the physical body.

SPIRITUAL PLANE:

Etheric Template – The Etheric Template (sometimes called the “Higher Etheric”) is a spiritual mirror or "photographic negative" of the Etheric Body. Sources of illness related to spiritual health may be found in the Etheric Template. Some energy healers spend a great degree of effort contacting and healing the Etheric Template. Blocks here sometimes translate to the feeling of being “stuck” and unable to exert one’s will in life. Some believe the Etheric Template is particularly responsive to sound and vibration, and those who use chanting, drumming, or music in their healing work often produce releases of blocks on the etheric level. The Etheric Template extends from about 15 to 24 inches out from the body and is sometimes seen as intense blue or violet.

Celestial Body – Extending from about 2 to 3 feet outward from the physical body, the Celestial Body is the body in which spiritual development, enlightenment, intuition, and transcendent awareness occurs. The “sense of oneness and universal love” sometimes experienced in meditation and mystical experiences is associated with activity in the Celestial Body. The Celestial Body is the level on which we feel most connected and "in sync" with our lives and the world around us - or more precisely, we feel merged and "at one" with the universe. Visually, it appears as a constant explosion of light or shiny mother-of-pearl which some say is difficult to describe in any detail.

Causal Body- (Sometimes called the “Ketheric Template”) The Causal Body is usually not defined as a “field” per se, and thus has no definable dimension. It is believed to be the outermost energetic layer of the human being and is sometimes called the “Higher Self.” It is supposed to contain karmic information and past-life memories, and serves as a conduit between the various energetic bodies and the Cosmic Source, God, The Divine, etc. Visually, intense golden strands of light. Some systems place the Causal Body much closer to the physical, and view it as part of the physical plane. Here it is used to represent aspects of the higher or true self, and the so-called karmic collective - the collection of all good action in the course of one's entire cosmic existence, and the manifestation of the actualized human being.

I hope you've found this information helpful. While not all Reiki practitioners incorporate any specific application of this theory to their work, I've found it particularly interesting to keep this system in mind as I've done my healing work over the years.

What Is Reiki?

Three definitions of Reiki:
  1. A healing modality using the hands as conduits to transmit chi (or ki) energy from sender to receiver.
  2. A consciously manifested expression of the innate human instinct to heal with touch.
  3. A study and practice of sensing subtle energies in and around living beings.
While the basic techniques of Reiki are considered ancient in origin, modern Reiki begins with a rediscovery by a Japanese monk and scholar named Mikao Usui in the mid-19th century (see the post: "A History of Usui Reiki"). Some sources trace the word Reiki to the Japanese words: raku and ki. Raku = vertical energy flow. Ki = horizontal energy flow. It is believed that Raku Ki was originally practiced by ancient Tibetan lamas as a form of meditation. The lamas would meditate on a series of symbols of calligraphs etched on bronze or brass plates. It was thought that this kind of meditation brought about physical and mental cleasing. These symbols, or surviving versions of them, are used today in some aspects of Reiki practice. The idea of an all-pervasive, universal "life force" energy is not unique to Reiki. In fact, nearly every culture has had it's own correlative version. A few examples:
  • Polynesian = Mana
  • Korean = Gi
  • Egyptian = Ka
  • Iroquis = Orenda
  • Hindi = Prana
  • Hebrew = Ruach
  • Islam = Barraka
  • Chinese = Chi/Qi
Reiki is a unique practice. But working with Ki or Chi is not unique to Reiki. Tai Chi, acupuncture, kundalini yoga, and qi gong are just a few examples of other methods that involve sensing and working with bioenergies. Reiki, therefore, makes no special claims to the concept of Ki or Chi. It's simply one system of using energy for the purpose of healing. In Japan, the word "Reiki" does not necessarily designate a specific healing modality as it tends to here in the west. Rather, it's used in conjunction with many energetic healing applications.

Reiki healers are those who have decided to become a conduit of healing Reiki energy. They wish to learn more about healing, subtle energies, and expanded awareness. To become a Reiki healer, one must receive attunements from a Reiki Master. An attunement is a clearing, opening, and aligning of body energy channels (chakras) making the healer a conduit for Reiki energy.

Working with Reiki requires your mindfulness, sensitivity, and discipline. Like learning a new language or to play a musical instrument, it takes practice to use Reiki effectively. While some people like to think of Reiki as a “special power” you should always understand that this power is not coming from you, but through you. As individuals, we are not the source of Reiki, but are channels for it.

While Reiki can be taught in a short amount of time, learning to use Reiki is an on-going process you may be engaged in for the rest of your life. Traditionally, Reiki is intended to be “passed down” only to those with a sincere commitment to use Reiki, and expand and refine their understanding of it.

If you're interested in learning Reiki, here are some things to consider.

Reiki is traditionally divided and taught in three separate classes or levels.

Reiki I

Reiki I students are taught the history of Reiki, given instruction regarding Reiki healings, and are attuned by a Reiki Master. There are usually three attunements in Reiki I. The Reiki I attunements are all that is necessary to create a Reiki healer. But without proper instruction, attunements are generally worthless.

Reiki II

Reiki level I healers can proceed to Reiki II. This class includes the teaching of the first 3 Reiki symbols which increase the effectiveness and potency of the energy for the healer. Theories and techniques of distance healing and energetic clearing are covered, as are polarity techniques.

Reiki III

Reiki II healers can elect to become "Reiki Masters" which increases their Reiki energy-channeling abilities, as well as entitling them to teach and pass attunements to new students. Much emphasis is placed on learning how to effectively pass and use attunements in a healing and teaching context, and Reiki III practitioners are expected to display a thorough understanding of all traditional techniques and concepts. The Master symbol is also taught.

Note that you'll find class structures and curriculum differing from teacher to teacher. The information above represents my own personal methods of teaching, but not the only such method. Some systems divide the traditional three-levels into several other levels or degrees, while others use a combined intensive attunement for all degrees at once. The three level system shown above is closest to the original Reiki system, and still the most commonly used today.

Article - The Human Energy Field

Modern science is rapidly rediscovering the energetic bodies discussed in the manual via the emerging interest in the Human Energy Field or HEF. The following article highlights some of the historically pertinent work in science regarding the HEF and is printed here with the kind permission of its author, Dr. Gloria Alvino.

The Human Energy Field in Relation to Science, Consciousness, and Health
By Gloria Alvino

The science and art of medicine that was initially one, and then split into two, are now approaching reunion. The healing science that became traditional medicine and alternate medicine is slowly becoming the healing sciences. The history of this topic is extensive -- extending back thousands of years.

5000 years ago, ancient spiritual tradition of India spoke of a universal source of all life. The energy called prana. This universal energy is the breath of life moves through all forms to give them life. Yogis work with this energy with breathing techniques, meditation, and physical exercise to produce altered states of consciousness and longevity.

3,000 years ago, the ancient Qigong masters in China were practicing their meditative discipline to balance and invigorate the human energy field. They called this vital energy that pervades all forms, both animate and inanimate, Qi. The Qi is the vital energy of the body; while gong means the skill of moving this Qi and working with it. Practitioners use mind control to move and control the Qi to not only improve health and longevity, but also to enhance awareness, psychic powers, and spiritual development. The ancient Qigong masters also developed Tai Chi, Kung Fu, and the martial arts. In addition, they made the first model for acupuncture. Acupuncturists insert needles, or use moxa, or put magnets at specific acupuncture points to balance the yin and yang of the human energy field. When the Qi is balanced, the entity has good health. When the Qi is unbalanced, the entity has poor or impaired health.

The Kabbalah, the Jewish mystical teachings written about 538 B.C., calls these energies the astral light. Later on, Christian paintings and sculptures show a halo around the head of Christ and other spiritual leaders. Similarly, we see this halo on statues and paintings of Buddha, and also see energy or light coming from the fingers of many of the gods of India.

In fact, there are references made to the phenomenon of the human energy field (HEF) or the aura of the body, in 97 different cultures, according to John White in his book "Future Science."

The history of medicine similarly reflects a fascination with the observation of the HEF and its study. Back in 500 B.C., the Pythagoreans believed that there is a universal energy pervading all of nature. They taught that its light could effect cures in sick patients.

In the 1100's, Liebault said that humans have an energy that can react on someone else's energy, either at a distance or close by. According to Liebault, a person can have either an unhealthy or a healthy effect on someone else -- just by being present. The HEF of one person may be harmonious, or it maye be discordant with another. The HEF of one person may be nurturing, or it may be draining to the HEF of another.

In the 1800's, Mesmer, the father of modern hypnotism, suggested that a field similar to an electromagnetic field might exist around the human body. Mesmer suggested that the power of this electromagnetic field, which he believed behaved as a fluid, might also be able to exert influence on the field of another.

In the mid-1800's, Count Von Reichenbach spent 30 years experimenting with the human energy field, which he called the odic field. He found that this field showed many properties which were similar to the electromagnetic field described by James Clark Maxwell in the early 1880's. However, Von Reichenbach also showed that with the odic force, like poles attract. In other words, like attracts like. In his work, "Physico-physiological Researches on the Dynamics of Magnetism, Electricity, Heat, Light, Crystallization, and Chemism, In Their Relation to Vital Force", printed in New York in 1851, Von Reichenbach showed that electropositive elements gave his subjects feelings of warmth, and that this produced unpleasant feelings. In the reverse, electronegative elements produced cool and agreeable feelings.

He also found that the odic field could be conducted through a wire. It traveled slowly at 13 feet per second. This speed depended on the density of the wire rather than its conductivity. He showed that part of this odic field could be focused like a light through a lens, while another part of this odic field would flow around the lens, like a candle flame flows around something placed in its path. Air currents would also move this part of the odic field. This suggests a composition similar to a gas. Von Reichenbach's experiments suggest the odic or auric field is energetic, like a light wave, and also particulate, like a fluid. Also, he showed the right side of the body as being a positive pole, and the left as negative. This agrees with the ancient Chinese principles of yin and yang.

2. MODERN STUDIES OF HEF

HEF Photography

Walter Kilner - Interest in the HEF was mounting in the medical community in the 1900's. In 1911. Walter Kilner, M.D., from St. Thomas Hospital in London, reported on seeing the HEF, or aura, as he called it. Looking through glass screens stained with dicyanin dye, he saw a glowing mist around the body in three distinct zones:

1. A 1/4 inch layer closest to skin;
2. A more vaporous layer, 1 inch wide, streaming perpendicularly from the body;
3. A delicate exterior luminosity with indefinite contours, about 6 inches wide.

In his work "The Human Aura" published in New York, 1965, he states that the appearance of the aura differs from person to person, depending on their physical, mental, and emotional states. Kilner actually developed a system of diagnosis based on the consistent differences he found in persons suffering a particular disease. He successfully treated many conditions, including epilepsy, liver disease, tumors, appendicitis, and hysteria. Research based on his work continues to this day in Europe.

Semyon Davidovich Kirlian - In 1939 in Krasnodar, near the Black Sea in Russia, Semyon Davidovich Kirlian, an electrician, and his wife, Valentina Kirlian, a teacher and journalist, became fascinated by the sight of a tiny flash of light which ocurred between the electrodes of an electrotherapy machine and the skin of a patient. Other Russian scientists had also noted this energy, but ignored it. The equipment and procedures they finally developed were to record on film this luminous energy emanating from the physical body -- the HEF. They invented a new type of photography, and had more than fourteen patents. The original system photographed static images of fingers or leaves. Next, they developed a special optical instrument to observe the motion of this luminous phenomenon. Now they saw the hand as either flashing, sparkling, steadily glowing, or as diminishing particles of light. They also showed the difference in the HEF of a human being harboring a disease that had not yet manifested symptoms!

Radionics - Dr. George De La Warr & Dr. Ruth Drown built instruments to detect radiation from living tissues, and developed Radionics, a system of detection, diagnosis & healing from a distance, using the human energy field. They took photographs using the patient's hair as an antenna. These photographs showed internal diseases, like tumors and cysts inside the liver, and cancers within the brain. The study of Radionics continues today in England. Reference "
Biomagnetism" and "Using Sound Waves To Probe Matter" by De La Warr in England 1965 and 1967.

HEF Microscopic Studies

Dr. Wilhelm Reich, colleague of Freud, in the early 1900's, studied the universal energy field which he called "orgone" in his 1942 book, "The Discovery of the Orgone." He studied the changes or imbalances in the orgone flow in relation to physical and psychological disease. As a psychiatrist, he used traditional methods of analysis in combination with methods of releasing these blockages of the orgone energy, or Qi as Easterners would call it.

Reich built an "accumulator" to concentrate this orgone or energy. With the accumulator, he charged a vacuum discharge tube. This tube then conducted a current of electricity at a potential lower than its normal discharge potential. Reich claimed to increase the nuclear decay rate of a radioisotope by placing it in his orgone accumulator. During the 1930's to 1950's, Reich experimented with these energies using the latest instrumentation of that time to observe the energy fields of animate and inanimate objects. He used a high power microscope to observe the energy field of microorganisms and human blood cells in the laboratory.

Gustave Naessens - Another more current development to consider is the work of the French microbiologist, Gustave Naessens, now continuing his research with his wife Francoise in Canada. In his hematology studies, Naessens observed in the blood, tiny particles too small to identify with conventional microscopic equipment. He invented a microscope which he called the somatascope. It has a magnification of 30,000 times, anda resolution of 150 angstroms to study these particles of dancing light.

His somatid theory states that cell division cannot take place without the presence of this tiny life force or energy particle that he calls the somatid. Naessens "believes that the somatid is the original spark of life, the pinpoint where energy condenses into matter." According to Naessens, the "somatid represents the manifestation of cosmic energy in a tiny, moving dot of physicality," as printed in "A New Answer to Cancer" in 'Well-Being', September/October ,1993.

HEF Light Emissions Studies

Bio-Energetics - Dr. John Pierrakas and Eva Pierrakas have developed a system of diagnosis and treatment of psychological disorders based on visual and pendulum-derived observations of the HEF. The information from these observations combined with body psychotherapeutic methods eventually developed into Bio-Energetics. The process called Core Energetics was delineated in a publication "The Core Energetics Process", in 1977. Dr. Pierrakas work suggests that the light emissions from the human body are closely related to health. There is a need to quantify these light emissions with reliable, standardized light measuring instruments to make this available to the medical profession for clinical diagnosis and treatment.

Dr. Richard Dobrin, Dr. John Pierrakos, and Barbara Brennan -- published "Instrumental Measurements of the Human Energy Field" in 1978. They measured the light level of a wave length of around 350 nanometers in a darkroom before, during, and after there were people in that room. Results show a slight increase of light when people are in it. When someone feeling exhausted and full of despair was in the room, the light value actually fell. With a colorizer they were able to show part of the auric field, or the HEF, on black and white television.

Hiroshi Motoyama - has measured low light levels coming from people who have practiced yoga for many years. He did this with a movie camera in a darkroom. Also, he studied the strength of a sender's and a receiver's energy meridians before and after treatment. Most of the time, the sender's energy level dipped and then rose again. Also, the energy at the heart chakra of the sender or healer increased after treating a patient. Refer to his publication "The Functional Relationship Between Yoga Asanas and Acupuncture Meridians" 1979 for exercises that he has developed to impact on the HEF.

Dr. Valorie Hunt - and colleagues at UCLA, published "A Study of Structural Neuromuscular Energy Field and Emotional Approaches", which is a study of the effects of Rolfing on the body and the psyche. She placed electrodes on the skin to record the low millivoltage signals from the body during rolfing sessions. Rosalyn Bruyere observed the auras and recorded her observations of both the rolfer and the patient. Breyere's observations were recorded on the same tape as the electronic data. She described the color, size, and energy movements of the chakras, and auric clouds, or HEF, involved.

Scientists then mathematically analyzed the wave patterns recorded by a Fourier analysis and a sonogram frequency analysis. The wave forms and frequencies reported by Rosalyn Bruyere correlated specifically with the colors reported. When Breyere saw blue in the HEF at a specific location, the electronic measurements would always show the characteristic blue wave form and frequency in the same location.

Hunt repeated this experiment with seven other aura readers. Each of the seven also saw auric colors that correlated with the same frequency wave patterns. In 1988, the results of their research showed these color and frequency correlations. Dr. Hunt says, "Throughout the centuries in which sensitives have seen and described the auric emissions, this is the first objective electronic evidence of frequency, amplitude and time, which validates their subjective observation of color discharge."

HEF Electromagnetic Field Studies

Dr. Robert Becker - of Upstate Medical School. mapped a complex electrical field on the body that was shaped like the body and the central nervous system. He named this field "The Direct Current Control System" in his publication of the same name in 1962. He found that this field changes shape and strength with physiological and psychological changes. Continuing his experiments through 1979, he found particles the size of electrons moving through this field.

Dr. Zheng Ronliang of Lanzhou University in China, in
"Scientific Research of Qigong", measured the Qi radiated from the human body by using a biological detector made from a leaf vein connected to a photo quantum device. He studied the Qi emissions of a Qigong master, and the energy field emanations of a clairvoyant. The energy pulses emanating from the hands of the Qigong Master are very different in nature from that of the clairvoyants. At Shanghai Atomic Nuclear Institute of Academia, Sinica, it was shown that some vital force emanations from Qigong masters seem to have a very low frequency fluctuating carrier wave. Sometimes, Qi was detected as a micro particle flow with a particle size of 60 microns in diameter, and velocity of 20-50 cm/sec.

Dr. Dejan Rakovic and Gordana Vitaliano MD - have conducted extensive experiments in Yugoslavia studying the biophysical nature of consciousness. Dr. Vitaliano is now in Boston, where she founded the Mindwaves' Institute. Dr. Vitaliano's primary research program is Neural Networks, Brain Waves, and Ionic Structures: A New Biophysical Model for Conscious Systems Processing.

In papers published in the January, 1, and January 15, 1996 issues of 21st Link, Dr. Racovic & Dr. Vitaliano discussed the possibility of HEF being associated with a low dielectric ionic structure with embedded ultra low frequency electromagnetic field. They also discussed the development of a new consciousness-exhibiting, brain-like biocomputer which would have a similar ionic neural network.

HEF Bioplasma Studies

Russian scientists from the Bioinformation Institute of A. S. Popov All-Union Scientific and Technical Society of Radio Technology and Electrical Communications, began a crash program on extra-sensory perception in 1965. They started to use the methods of physicists with their experiments on telepathy. The scientists of this Popov group later announced the discovery that living organisms emit vibrations at a frequency of 300 to 2,000 nanometers. They called this energy the biofield, or bioplasma. They showed that the biofield was stronger when people were more successful at transferring their bioenergy. These findings were confirmed at the Medical Sciences Academy in Moscow, and are supported by research in Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, and Great Britain.

Since the 1950's, Dr. Victor Inyushin at Kazakh University in Russia has also done extensive research in HEF. He suggests the existence of a bioplasmic energy field composed of ions, free protons, and free electrons. He suggests that the bioplasmic energy field is a fifth state of matter. (The four states are solids, liquids, gases, and plasma.) Inyushin's work shows that the bioplasmic particles are constantly renewed by chemical processes in the cells and are in constant motion. There is a balance of positive and negative particles within the bioplasma that is relatively stable. A severe shift in thisbalance causes a change in the health of the patients or organism. At the same time, in a healthy being, some of this energy or bioplasma is radiated into space. Refer to four of his works:
1. "Questions of Theoretical and Applied Biology," 2." Possibilities of Studying Tissues in High Frequency Discharge," 3. Biological Plasma of Human Organism with Animals," 4. "On the Biological Essence of the Kirlian Effect" 1967-1970.

HEF Studies - Conclusion

Modern science tells us that the human organism is not just a physical structure made of molecules; but like everything else, is composed of energy fields. We are constantly changing, ebbing, and flowing, just like the sea. Scientists are learning to measure these subtle changes. The human energy field is the frontier for modern research, and the development of new diagnostic and treatment systems.

We are constantly swimming in a vast sea of life energy fields, thought fields, and bioplasmic forms, moving about and streaming off the body. We are vibrating; radiating bioplasma itself.

People have recognized this phenomenon in the past. Now we are rediscovering it. This is thus not a new phenomenon; but rather, a new observation, a growing awareness, a new perspective, and a renewed interest in studying the intricacies of the unknown.
